Dear Mr. Chapman

I am sorry to say you will have no novel of mine this year – as I have been ill & unable to work at it for some months.

But Mrs. Hooper – (late Miss Jane Winnard) whose childs’ children's books Messrs Addey & Cundall have been publishing, & who is a first rate periodical writer, tells me she has just finished a Novel. The subject is peculiar & striking – in fact I think the book will likely be a great success. What say you to it – for on the usual terms of first novels by known periodical writers, viz £150? – I think Mrs. Hooper would be satisfied with that & you will not get such an original subject or such a good novel, in a hurry.

Will you write me yes or no – as to your inclination for the same – & you shall have the M.S. manuscript

Very sincerely yours Dinah Mulock – Apr April 6th /54 1854
