<l>LAST night,</l>
<l>Standing outside the door of my house</l>
<l>I saw the white face of the city, lying asleep in the</l>
<l>mist</l>
<l>Dreaming, with blind eyes turned inward.</l>
<l>Last night,</l>
<l>Listening outside the door of my house I heard</l>
<l>The silence of the dreaming city</l>
<l>Listening and attending to its dream.</l>
<l>Rigidly the lamp-posts waited in stiff rows, silent.</l>
<l>And the street-lamps spread white blotches in</l>
<l>the mist;</l>
<l>Hoo. .on the river a ferry-boat . . . hoo . . .</l>
<l>While on the roof-tops the cats</l>
<l>Paused, paw in air. . . .</l>
<l>Sheltered in silence, the listening city</l>
<l>Cowered and trembled lest Terror be loosened;</l>
<l>Clung to its dream lest the red ghost of Fear</l>
<l>Leap from the darkness, clamoring,</l>
<l>Bound and ricochet down the empty avenues,</l>
<l>Scatter the cats on the roof-tops,</l>
<l>Flicker the lights of the sentinel lamp-posts,</l>
<l>Beat on the faces of sleepers until</l>
<l>Up through the roofs a million voices rise.</l>
<l>Wailing, “I am alone,”</l>
<l>Screaming, “I am afraid!”</l>
